A consistent end-of-month process is one of the simplest ways business owners can improve accuracy, cash flow visibility and compliance — without adding unnecessary complexity.
Rather than scrambling at BAS time, regular month-end reviews help ensure your records are up to date, your numbers make sense and issues are identified early.
Below is the end-of-month checklist we recommend for small businesses.
Reconcile bank and loan accounts
Ensure all bank and loan accounts are reconcil4ed to month-end so your finanical data is complete and reliable.
Unreconciled accounts increase the risk of errors flowing through to reporting and compliance obligations.
Review income and expense coding
Confirm transactions are coded correctly, including:
- Business vs private expenses
- GST-free, input-taxed and taxable items
Accurate coding is essential for reliable reporting and GST outcomes.
Confirm completeness of records
At month-end, check that all income and expenses for the period have been entered and nothing has been missed or duplicated.
Incomplete records can distort performance reporting and impact downstream compliance, including BAS.
Review payroll and super
If you employ staff, ensure:
- Payroll is complete
- Superannuation is accruing correctly
PAYG withholding appears reasonable
Regular review reduces the likelihood of issues compounding over time.
Review key financial reports
An effective month-end process includes reviewing your core reports to ensure the figures make sense:
Profit & Loss
Balance Sheet
Accounts receivable (debtors)
Accounts payable (creditors)
GST summary
If debtor or creditor balances are incorrect for example, missing invoices, duplicated bills or timing issues, GST and BAS figures will also be impacted.
Address issues promptly
If something doesn’t look right, address it at month-end rather than leaving it until quarter- or year-end.
Small issues are far easier to fix when caught early.
Why month-end discipline matters
A well-run end-of-month process does more than support compliance, it improves the quality of your business information and, as a result, decision making ability.
When financial data is reviewed regularly, business owners are better placed to:
- Make informed decisions based on accurate, up-to-date information
- Assess business performance earlier
- Anticipate cash flow and funding needs
Reduce time, cost and disruption at year-end
Accounting systems only support better decisions when the data is maintained and reviewed consistently.
